  • How can a quarter save you from eating food that has gone bad?
  • If you have frequent power outages this could save you money.
  • Learn this freezer trick that keeps your food safe to eat.

Some people in Texas lose power more than others. The stability of your local power grid might not have much to do with the Ercot power grid.

Texans living out in the country and in small towns have to worry about their power lines more than others. Imagine that there is a tree-lined street with power lines that only go to your house.

With so many different ways for the power to go out, this one tip could keep you from throwing out food in your freezer when you don't have to.

Peace of Mind Only Costs A Quarter in Texas

Quick and easy tips that save you money and keep you healthy are a win-win. Here is all you need to do to know that the food in your freezer is safe to eat after a power interruption:

  • Find an empty cup and fill it almost to the top with water.
  • Place the cup in your freezer and wait until it has frozen solid.
  • Put a quarter on top of the ice, and set it back in the freezer.

This is so easy to do. If you have been away from home and are concerned about interruptions in your electricity, then check the quarter.

According to an article in Reader's Digest, if the quarter is still on top you haven't had a power outage, and the contents of your freezer are safe to consume. If that quarter went to the middle or the bottom of the cup, your food may not be safe to eat.
