Will Texans Ever Accept The Ultimate Self-Serve Checkout?
I saw something at the D.F.W. that has been a long time coming! It may not be wanted, but its been said that this is the wave of the future.
Here's What Lit The Fuse
I constantly see people complaining about self-checkout, and having to show their receipts. They claim that they are somehow "working" for the company by checking their groceries, not realizing that by doing this, they help the company keep costs down, which usually results in the goods themselves costing less (I think we all know these are the same people who love to complain about slow checkers when there is one available).
What Should Have Happened
If someone, anyone, would have put out an ad that said, "We're giving you the option for a quicker, easier shopping experience" people would have adopted all of this sooner. Since people feel like these changes are happening without their input they got the raw red butt over it.
Now Here Comes The Explosion
The D.F.W. airport now has a 100% self-serve checkout. You walk into a giant glass box full of merchandise and then you walk out. You don't have to do anything. You do have to make sure your credit card or payment system is in place. You just enter, grab your bag of trail mix, and somehow the technology takes over on the way out. There is NO human interaction past getting your initial billing setup.
So Will It Become A Thing?
It's hard to tell. Things like this take time before people quit being suspicious of the process. The airport was very busy when I was there and there was NO ONE using the glass box o' snacks. Seriously, I didn't see anyone go near it, even though there were lines at all of the other businesses. Time will tell if these take off, but again, we may not even be given a choice.
