After what seems like an eternity of rain and countless rounds of thunderstorms that have been pounding East Texas for the last month or so, it appears as if the faucet has been turned off for a while. Or at least it appears that way.

Now with all of that rain we've received we are going to have a bigger problem because there is a lot of standing and ponding of water which becomes a huge breeding ground for mosquitos.

The past couple of days I've received several phone calls from pest control providers asking me if I'd be interested in signing up for mosquito control.

Thankfully I have not experienced a mosquito problem at my house, but that could change if I have some neighbors who don't empty the containers that have collected rainwater the past few weeks. Plus, I also don't spend a lot of time outdoors once I get home from work so I'm not all that worried about them right now.

But when I do go outside I'm mindful that I could be bitten by one of those little blood-sucking pests and that I could receive a red welp from their little sting.

If you must be outdoors around dawn or dusk when mosquitos are most active there are some colors you should wear to help repel those pests.

Ways to keep the mosquitos away:

• Wear a mosquito repellent that's recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to limit exposed skin susceptible to bites.
• Remove areas of standing water, such as dog bowls, bird baths, and garbage cans, as mosquitos can use these areas to breed.
• Keep your lawn and gutters clean.
• Call a professional service to assist in control efforts.
