When Will Fall Colors Arrive in East Texas?

(Mix 93-1) According to the calendar and the recent autumn equinox, it’s officially fall. However, across much of Texas, including here in East Texas, the temperatures don’t feel like fall just yet. Instead, it still feels very much like summer, but we know those cooler temperatures will arrive eventually, and when they do, we'll see the beauty of the fall colors.

Unlike Texas, many parts of the US are already experiencing the splendor of fall foliage and being treated to the amazing palette of color that is produced by the changing of leaves. In time, Texas residents will get to experience Fall color in our special way.

When Will East Texas See Fall Colors?

Fall color in Texas may not be as dramatic as in the Pacific Northwest or as striking as in New England, but it still boasts its own unique beauty. Texans know it will be a quick change, too. Green one day, reddish-orangish-yellowish the next day, and then burnt brown three days later!

Although fall is here and our days are getting shorter, our green leaves are still hanging on. Fall's color doesn't typically arrive in East Texas and Texas until sometime in late October or even early November for some. We might see some color changes before then on some trees.

The Farmer's Almanac has a slick Fall foliage color map that shows the progression of Fall foliage county by county across the US. It predicts East Texas will begin to see the leaves change around November 2nd.

Why Leaves Change Color Each Fall

Due to less sunlight and heat, leaves lose the ability to produce food, and the chlorophyll that gives the leaves their green color begins to break down, and that's when the vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds begin appearing. The weather also plays a big role in color and how long it sticks around. Rainy and windy days will ramp up the process and shorten the amount of time you'll see the change happen.

Fall color is coming to East Texas; it's just a little later than the rest of the country.
