Just like the East Texas spring flowers and weeds, thousands of garage sales will be popping up along historic U.S. Highway 80 this weekend, and they'll be loaded with deals for everyone driving along Highway 80.

The Highway 80 Sale occurs twice a year, each spring and fall. The sale once stretched more than 2400 miles across the southern states along US Highway 80 that ran from Savannah, Georgia, to San Diego, California. Since then, the highway has been divided up and returned to the states, but portions of the original are still intact.

The only portion that remains of US Highway 80 runs from the east side of Dallas to Tybee Island, Georgia. This weekend, roadside garage sales will pop up along a 392-mile span of highway, creating one of the world's longest garage sales.

Why did the Highway 80 Sale begin?

Attention. What else? It was to draw attention to all the small towns along a historic highway and how these communities were looking for support for local businesses. Over time, the event grew into a huge event with sellers setting up shop and buyers driving down the highway.

• Pack snacks and water - it's going to be a long day, and you'll need nourishment and hydration
• Watch for sale signs - they're the sign of deals
• Drive carefully - the garage sale stretches for miles
