R.I.P Fruit Stripe Gum: Here’s Other Discontinued Things Texans Want Back
It is the end of an era. Well, kinda. But it for sure is the first “death” of 2024. I’m talking about the end of Fruit Stripe Gum.
The candy company behind Fruit Strip Gum announced that they would discontinuing the colorful “zebra-striped” gum after a pretty impressive 55-year run.
“The decision to sunset this product was not taken lightly, and we considered many factors before coming to this decision, including overall brand trends for Fruit Stripe Gum."
I was a fan of this colorful gum not only because it was pretty damn flavorful but also because the gum wrappers also served as temporary tattoos and well, I thought that was pretty cool as a teen!
Fruit Stripe Gum is also known for its vibrant zebra mascot. (Which btw was affectionately named "Yipes," was associated with the iconic ad slogan, "Yipes! Stripes!")
It originally launched in 1969 and offered a pretty awesome variety of flavors including Wet n' Wild Melon, Cherry, Lemon, Orange, and Peach.
This isnt the first time something we all grew to love has been discontinued. From restaurants to even food menu items, I asked locals to tell us about a discontinued product that they wished would make a comeback and boy did I take a stroll down memory lane reading some of their responses. Here’s a few:
- Kmart & Their Cafe
- Frutopia Drinks
- “Gee your hair smells terrific”
- Philadelphia Strawberry Cheesecake Snack Bars
- Whataburger Wednesdays
- Mcdonald’s $1 Hamburgers
- Burger Chef
