GOOD FOR TEXAS: State Purchases 350,000 Acre Mega Ranch
Texas is a large state. The second largest state in the US covering 261,193 square miles. Guess that's why they say things are bigger in Texas.
Among those things are ranches and farmland. Texas has several large ranches, in fact, they've been named mega ranches and one of them is actually larger than the state of Rhode Island. King Ranch in South Texas is the largest of these mega ranches and is larger than the smallest state in the US!
From time to time these mega ranches come up for sale. One of these mega ranches was listed for over $320 million in 2022 and since has seen a price reduction. Brewster Ranch in South Texas was recently on the market for $245,678,330. While it's hard for us to drop $200 million plus on a good chunk of Texas land because we don't have the financial backing of an Elon Musk or Jerry Jones, the State Of Texas does.
The Texas General Land Office recently purchased the mega ranch for an undisclosed amount of money. The purchase is strategic and important to the state for the management of public lands and mineral rights. The purchase also keeps foreign investors from owning more of the precious land in the Lone Star State.
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham tells Land Report,
As Texas Land Commissioner and the steward of more than 13 million acres of state land, I am proud to have acquired this beautiful property for the State of Texas. By securing this large swath of land along our southern border, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) is not only blocking foreign adversaries from purchasing this land but also ensuring this mineral-rich property will be generating revenue for the school children of Texas."
Brewster Ranch is actually a collection of 28 different ranches that had been purchased over a decade's time by the previous owner. The sprawling land parcel includes deserts, rivers, and mountains sits in the Big Bend region of the state and actually borders the Big Bend National Park.
The mega ranch was much larger but the previous owner sold off nearly 75,000 acres of land as three separate ranches.
