If you want to enjoy an area where you can go swimming, canoeing or just enjoying some sun in Texas, you could certainly go to the beach to do that. You can travel to South Padre Island, Port Aransas or Galveston Island if you live near there.

But...what if you don't? What if you live on the OTHER side of the state in West Texas? That could be a very long drive. However there is an area that looks like a tropical getaway located in a South Texas city and it's been here for over 100 years.

You can enjoy this secret beach in Uvalde, Texas

Located along the Nueces River, Chalk Bluff Park has become a pretty popular getaway spot for Texans since it was established in 1922. If you live in Uvalde, it's only about a 15 minute drive outside of town. The nearest major city is San Antonio, which less than 100 miles away.

The park comes with cabins for anyone who wants to camp out & stay the night & areas for people who travel via RV. On the other side of the river are the giant cliffs that have that chalky appearance. Even if you're not the outdoorsy type, the view of the area from the area looks amazing.

Some people have posted videos of their trips to Chalk Bluff Park and you can see just how large the park can get with people; but, it doesn't seem to diminish the fun people have with swimming, canoeing or swinging into the water.

You can find out more about Park Chalk Bluff on their website here.

The Official U.S. Government 'Do Not Travel' List

Traveling to unique and exotic places rather than the usual tourist traps can be quite an adventure. However, it's crucial to research your destination thoroughly.

While every trip comes with some degree of risk, requiring you to mind your surroundings and take some precautions, there are some places you just shouldn't visit, as they are not worth the risk.

The United States government has a convenient website that helps by listing travel advisories they have in place for countries all over the world, ranking the risk from Level 1 through Level 4.

If a country is issued a Level 4 advisory, you should NOT travel there. As of November 2024, the countries below are on the 'Do Not Travel' list.
