Tips for Revamping Your New Years Resolution
So you made your New Years resolution...but are you keeping it?
It's halfway through January (hard to believe, I know) and that means your New Years resolution should have become a habit by now right? That is, if your goal was to exercise more, eat healthier, be more positive or something along those lines.
As I sit here and reflect on how well I've done at sticking to my New Years resolution, I realize that my efforts have faded pretty drastically in the past week. Maybe, that's just me, but if anyone else is in the same boat, here's some advice about how to revamp your New Years resolution.
One of the main ways to stick to a goal is to constantly remind yourself of it. For me, seeing my goal written somewhere each day is a great reminder. In the past I've written sticky notes with my goals on them and placed them around my house and office kind of like a to-do list. By doing that, I was able to see the reminder several times each day and when I began to get used to seeing it, I would rewrite it on a different colored sticky note or move it to another location. Another great place to write out a goal is on your mirror. As you get ready for each day, there is inevitably some time spent in front of a mirror, so why not use that as a place to remind yourself of your goal? Fun fact, you can use a dry erase marker on mirrors and it will wipe right off with a cloth!
An additional way to revamp your goal is to alter it slightly for each day. Let's say your resolution was to be more positive each day - make your goal for tomorrow to say something positive every time you want to complain. And then the next day you could set your goal to smile at people as you walk past them. By setting smaller goals it oftentimes help you reach your major one more quickly and effectively.
My last bit of advice for revamping your resolution is based on the buddy system. Find a friend, co-worker or family member and agree to hold each other accountable for following through with your resolution. Sometimes having a personal cheerleader can be much more beneficial than you think. After all, waking up at 5 each day to go to the gym can be exhausting, but waking up knowing that someone is counting on you to go to the gym with them can be motivating.
So why not give these tips a try? After all, a New Years resolution isn't meant to only last a few weeks.
