How UNT’s New Program Makes College More Affordable
(Denton, Texas) Securing financing for higher education can be challenging for many Texas students. College tuition and fees are astronomical, and then there are books and supplies that go along with the classes that drive up the cost. For some, these costs are hard to overcome, putting a college education out of reach.
With a daughter in college, I can relate to how expensive higher education has become.

What Is the North Texas Promise?
Thanks to a new initiative from the University of North Texas (UNT), college will become more accessible to students than ever before. The largest higher education institution in the Dallas area recently announced the North Texas Promise program.
Who Qualifies for Free Tuition at UNT
This is similar to a program that is offered by TJC and UT Tyler in Tyler. Beginning this fall, qualifying first-time freshmen looking to earn a bachelor's degree will have the full cost of their tuition and mandatory fees covered for up to four years.
Students will still be responsible for books and supplies, but if they can get tuition and fees covered for free, a college degree is well within their grasp.

How to Apply for the Program
Texas students whose family makes less than $100,000 per year are eligible for this program as long as they meet academic and other criteria. To be considered, students will need to complete the FAFSA form and submit it by February 12, 2026.
UNT vice president of enrollment, Shannon Goodman, says,
This program is about making a UNT degree attainable for students who have worked hard and earned their place here, but may be uncertain about affordability,” said Shannon Goodman, UNT’s vice president for enrollment. “The North Texas Promise gives families clarity and confidence that cost will not stand in the way of a college education."
