David Ortiz, known to Boston Red Sox fans as Big Papi, was shot Sunday night while visiting a nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Just 24 hours after he was shot, the Boston Red Sox arranged for an medical air transport to bring him back to Boston to be treated. It's not known if he was the intended target for the shooting.

He led the Red Sox to three World Series championships, was a 10-time All-Star and hit 541 home runs. To say he is beloved in Boston is an understatement. The Red Sox organization is behind him, and so are many celebrities and dignitaries responding with their support and prayers.

On twitter, former President Barrack Obama recalled Big Papi's spirit helping to rally the city following the Boston Marathon attacks.

New England Patriots tweeted their appreciation, love and support for Ortiz as well. Both Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski shared their admiration for the future Baseball Hall of Fame player.
